Learning Objectives

Use the following objectives to check your learning as you proceed through the class:

  • Find ISearch on the INFOhio website: www.infohio.org.
  • Explore the ISearch interface and understand which content collections are available in ISearch.
  • Learn what ISearch Mobile is and how to access it.
  • Explore the ISearch Mobile interface.
  • Develop good search strategies.
  • Use the tabs to find the right content for your students.
  • Use the limiters to get the results you want.
  • Identify best practices for using ISearch in the classroom.
  • Understand the importance of using digital text, print, and other media in your curriculum.
  • Consider methods for sharing ISearch with parents.
  • Reflect on learning by sharing information with others.

In this class, you will work through several lessons to learn how to access ISearch, how to use it to find content for your students, and how to teach students to use it. Below is a description of each lesson and an estimate of the amount of time it may take to complete each one.

Getting Started
  • Pre-test: Take a quiz to find out what you know or need to know about ISearch. 5 minutes
  • Your Assignment: Review the course objectives and the course overview. 5 minutes
How to Use ISearch
  • Getting to Know ISearch: Find ISearch, explore the tabbed results interface, and learn about the kinds of content you'll find under each tab. 20 minutes
  • Search Basics: Develop good search strategies and learn about some advanced search strategies that are easy to use to get good results. 10 minutes
  • Searching Across the Tabs: Explore results under the different tabs, learn how to get to the full text, and use clues in the interface to help you come up with additional search strategies. 20 minutes
  • Getting the Results You Want: Learn how applying limiters under each tab can give you better results. 15 minutes
  • Saving Items: Practice using the different options for saving and sharing items you find in ISearch. 20 minutes
  • What Have You Learned So Far? Take a short quiz to check what you know. 5 minutes
  • Applying What You Have Learned: Use ISearch to find different types of content on a topic and save at least one item that you will use to supplement your curriculum. 10 minutes
ISearch Mobile
  • Getting to Know ISearch Mobile: Learn about ISearch Mobile and how to access it. 5 minutes
  • Searching in ISearch Mobile: Learn how to search for content and limit searches using ISearch Mobile. 5 minutes
  • Accessing My Account from ISearch Mobile: Access your library account through ISearch and create book lists for upcoming units or lessons. 5 minutes
Teaching with ISearch and Digital Content
  • Using Digital Content with Students: Learn about best practices for helping students use digital text and complete an exercise to help students make print and digital text connections. 20 minutes
  • Helping Students Use ISearch: Complete an exercise to help students learn to use ISearch to find resources for research. 20 minutes
  • Sharing ISearch with Parents: Learn about ways to help parents support their children as they use ISearch and engage with digital text. 10 minutes
Checking Your Learning
  • Self-Assessments: Answer questions to reflect on what you learned. 15 minutes
  • Contact Hour Quiz and Certificate: Take a quiz to earn a certificate for 3 contact hours. 5 minutes
