Saving Items

Learning Objectives
  • Identify best practices for using ISearch in the classroom.

If you are searching for content that you may want to use later, you can save items from multiple resources to a single list. To save items to My Lists you need to log into My Account. Most users will log in using their Alt ID or Barcode as the User ID and their birth month and birth day (MMDD format) as the PIN. If you aren't sure how to log into My Account, contact your school librarian. Once you've logged in, you can save items from any of the tabs to My List for later reference.

If you want to save items for student use, you may want to save to a cloud drive or to Google Classroom. Note: the only way to save information about items on the My Library tab is to use the My Lists feature. When saving to a cloud drive or Google Classroom, you will be saving items on the Encyclopedias, Basic Sources, Advanced Sources, STEAM, and Open Access tabs.

When you find individual items on the Encyclopedias, Basic Sources, Advanced Sources, STEAM, or Open Access tabs, that you want to save to your cloud drive or to Google Classroom click the View/Download button (2).

When you click the View/Download button, you will land on an EBSCO Detailed Record page.

You have the following options for saving on the Detailed Record page:

  • Google Classroom, Google Drive, print, email, or save to the device or an external drive. (3)
  • Permalink—as you learned in a previous lesson, this button is very important, so let's review! (5)

If you want to save or share a link to an item you find in ISearch, you must use the permalink. Do not use the URL you see in your browser address bar as that URL is dynamic and will not get you back to that item. Instead, click the Permalink button. A box just above the record information will appear that includes a URL you can use to get back to that item.  Learn more about how to share and save content from ISearch using the permalink by watching this short video.

If you don't use Google Classroom and want to include a link to this item in a learning management system, use the permalink.

If you use Google Classroom, complete these steps to save:

  1. Click the Google Classroom icon (note that clicking the Google Classroom text doesn't work; you must click the icon). The Google Classroom box or login prompt will open in a new window. If you have multiple computer screens or lots of applications open, you may need to minimize some items to find Google Classroom box.
  2. Select the classroom with which you want to share the item.
  3. Choose the action you want to apply to that item and then click the GO button.

Now look at those tiny, double left-angle brackets just above the full text options (in the image above look at the "Notice this!" arrow). If you click the double left-angle brackets, you will "close" the full text options and they will switch to double right-angle brackets. Click the double right-angle brackets to "expand" the full text options. It's important to notice that feature now because when you view that item again through Google Classroom, it may be closed, making it a little difficult to find the full text options.

If you click the Google Drive button and nothing seems to happen, you may have a pop-up blocker enabled on your browser. To save to Google Drive, you need to disable any pop-up blockers. You also may need to allow EBSCO to access your Google Drive.

If the full text of your item is from a content provider other than EBSCO (like World Book, Science Online, or Oxford) there may be additional options for saving within that interface. For example:

  1. Click Full Text in World Book Student.
  2. Locate the gear icon to find the Tools and Settings. Click the icon.
  3. Click the Save button to find options for saving as a PDF or saving to Google Drive or One Drive.
  4. Click the Share button to find options for Email and Google Classroom.

If you find an item from Science Online on the STEAM tab, you can follow these steps to save:

  1. Click Full Text in Science Online.
  2. Click the Share button.
  3. Here you will find options for saving a permalink (Record URL), Email, Embed (to save to a learning management system other than Google Classroom), and a direct import to Google Classroom (Share To).
