Getting to Know Points of View Reference Center

 

Learning Objectives
  • Understand the importance of using digital text and other media to support the inquiry process. 
  • Find Points of View Reference Center on the INFOhio website: www.infohio.org.

 

Access Points of View Reference Center

You can access Points of View Reference Center on a computer, tablet, or other device with internet access.

There are two ways to locate Points of View Reference Center. 

If you work with students in grades 6-8.

  1. Go to the INFOhio home page (www.infohio.org). 
  2. Click on the Grades 6-8 button.
  3. Scroll until you find Points of View Reference Center and click on the blue "i" in the right corner of the resource box.
  4. Read the additional information about Points of View Reference Center. We will revisit additional resources later in this lesson.
  5. Click the Open button to open the resource.

If you work with students in grades 9-12.

  1. Go to the INFOhio home page (www.infohio.org). 
  2. Click on the Grades 9-12 button.
  3. Scroll until you find Points of View Reference Center and click on the blue "i" in the right corner of the resource box.

Sharing Links to Licensed Resources

Sharing Content Using Google Classroom and Permalink

You can share content from Points of View Reference Center using Google Classroom or the permalink. 

Using Google Classroom

  1. Located in the menu to the right of the article, select the Google Classroom button.
  2. A new window will open. Select the class and the type of post you want to create. 
  3. Select Go. A new window will open that will to add the material to your Google Classroom.

Using the Permalink 

If you want to save or share a link to an item you find in Points of View Reference Center, you must use the permalink. Do not use the URL you see in your browser address bar as that URL is dynamic and will not get you back to that item.

  1. Click the Permalink button. A box just above the record information will appear that includes a URL you can use to get back to that item.
  2. Copy the link. Use this link to paste into a learning management system, Google Doc or Side, or to a class website.

Note: The permalink will return the user to the page. From here the user can access the point article, the counterpoint article and the guide to critical analysis. Please be aware, the user should be logged into the INFOhio website before using the permalink, and may be prompted for a username and password for authentication purposes.

Saving Content Using Google Drive or Save PDF to Cloud

You can save content from Points of View Reference Center using Google Drive or Save PDF to Cloud. 

Save to Google Drive

  1. Located in the menu to the left of the article, select Google Drive.
  2. A new window will open. Select the Google account where you would like to save the article.

Note: Please make sure the pop-up blocker is disabled.

Save PDF to Cloud

Users can save articles from Points of View Reference Center to their Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox.

  1. Located in the menu to the left of the article, select Save PDF to Cloud.
  2. A new window will open. Select where you would like to save the article, Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive.

Once the destination is selected, users choose a location within their Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive to save the article.

Reflecting on Your Learning
Answer the following questions in the INFOhio Resources for Research Open Space group Discussions. Find the Features of Points of View Reference Center reflection question in the Discussions tab. Reply to the thread and review other participants' responses.
  1. Thinking about your students, name at least two features about Points of View Reference Center that will appeal to your students.
  2. What is one question about this resource that you hope will be answered in the training? 
  3. Think about a time when you used a digital resource with your students (article, image, video, etc). What did you like about using the digital resource? How was it different than using other resources in your teaching?
