Teaching with Literature Online

Learning Objectives
  • Identify best practices for using Literature Online in the classroom.

Best Practices for Digital Reading

When teaching with Literature Online make sure to include Best Practices for Digital Reading to ensure students are taking full advantage of the tools and resources when reading digital text.

The Best Practices for Digital Reading components include:

  • Students should recognize and use digital tools while reading digitally to maximize comprehension.
  • Students should have a plan and prioritize outcomes before reading a digital text.
  • Digital text should be high quality (“high-quality writing, images, narration and audio support, as well as extensive navigational controls for interactivity.”) Cahill and McGill-Franzen, 2013.

Another resource that will be helpful is, Close Reading and Analysis of Digital Text -- Grades 9-12, a blog written about how to help students analyze digital text.

Monday Mini Lessons

Monday Mini Lessonsfocus on strategies educators need to engage and connect with students wherever learning takes place. These model lessons are practical approaches with learned best practices to support the use of digital content in instruction whether face-to-face or virtual.

Although this particular mini lesson uses Literary Reference Center and not Literature Online, it is still a great example of how you can teach literature using a digital resource. Watch the Mini Lesson below on using Literary Reference Center to Teach Best Practices for Digital Reading.

Read the blog that accompanies this video to learn more about how you can teach with digital resources in the classroom.
