INFOhio's Core Collection of Electronic Resources
has several resources which will help your students learn more about tsunamis and their
aftermath.
NewsBank Newspapers From the main menu page,
click on Natural Disasters near the top of the page under Special Reports.
Within this site you will find the latest articles from newspapers and newswires around
the world. Subtopics for articles include Disaster Relief and Disease Prevention
Efforts, Emergency Preparedness and Response and more. In the right column
are links to excellent maps of the regions involved as well as additional search terms for
students wishing to study more about this phenomenon. Local Ohio newspaper articles can
also be searched from NewsBanks main page. (Grades 6-12, Current Events, Social
Studies)
AccessScience
Type in the keyword tsunami for several types of articles.
Under the encyclopedia article, you will find an excellent description of the phenomenon
and several graphics with information on a previous tsunami in Oregon. Above this article
you will notice an icon for a short animation on how tsunamis are created.
AccessScience
recently added a link near the bottom-center of the site entitled Background: Sumatra
earthquake and tsunami. There are before and after satellite images of areas of Sri
Lanka, as well as direct links to related articles within AccessScience and
recommended Web sites. (Grades 6-12, Science)

SIRS Discoverer
In addition to tsunami articles found using a keyword search,
check
Current Events for the latest information on the tsunami and other events
of worldwide importance. Pictures of the recent and
previous tsunami damage can be found by clicking on Pictures in the lower right
corner and typing tsunami in the search box.
An excellent graphic called Tsunami Birth shows how these destructive
waves are formed. (Grades 2-8, Current Events)
Britannica Online School Edition Use
the keyword tsunami for articles describing this scientific phenomenon in both
the Britannica and Britannica Student Encyclopaedias. In addition, from the main results
screen check the Journals & Articles (not updated as of this writing), Internet
Guides to Web sites (some of these are listed below under Additional Internet
Content) and a short video clip of the tsunami in Hilo, HA under Video & Media. (Grades
4-8 and 6-12, Science)
For information on the
countries and regions involved, enter the names of the countries impacted (listed below)
for maps and information on each. (Grades 4-12, Social Studies)
EBSCOhost For the latest newspaper and
magazine articles on the tsunami in Southeast Asia, select the appropriate level: Primary,
Middle or Secondary Search. At present, the greatest quantity of
articles will be in Secondary Search, since that database includes daily
publications such as USA Today and Christian Science Monitor. As more
magazine articles are published, Primary and Middle Search
will contain current information. Articles about tsunamis in general or disasters from the
past are currently listed in all three levels. The most recent articles will always appear
first, so students wont need to search for the latest news or statistics. (Grades
2-12, Current Events, Social Studies)
Oxford Reference Online
Type in the keyword tsunami for definitions and derivations
from several resources. (You may want to limit your search to those in the Earth &
Environmental Sciences section, in red text in the Subject Reference
section.) The most detailed entry is from The Oxford Companion to the Earth.
(Grades 6-12, Science)
