Senator White, Pat [Sommers], thank you for joining our celebration today and for your presentation to our 2000th school, the Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Development. I’d also like to thank Sirsi and Sun, because without you we wouldn't have the products, services and expertise we need to meet the challenges we face.

Sometimes when I look at all we've all accomplished together, I am just amazed and so proud. We started in 1989, and now we have nearly 2,200 schools and more than 1 million students using INFOhio’s library automation system.

This would not have happened if everyone in this room didn’t believe in the value and power of school libraries. And, we certainly wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for Mike Lucas, State Librarian, and the support of his Board President, Lucille Hastings. They have provided the leadership and the encouragement to all K-12 schools to compete for federal dollars.

As a result, Ohio has received 10 million federal dollars for automation and innovative technology grants, and the State Library has pledged to fund the Libraries Connect electronic resource core collection for $1 million a year for INFOhio and our sister networks, OPLIN and OhioLINK. Both executive directors – Carol Roddy and Tom Sanville – are with us tonight.

The INFOhio team and I would also like to thank the state senators and representatives for taking time to attend today’s reception, along with representatives of the Ohio Education Computer Network, the Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio SchoolNet Commission, and Kent State School of Library Information Sciences. Together we are all working to make Ohio a leader and a trendsetter in the delivery of innovative school library services.

We thank Dr. Todd and the State Library for funding the Ohio Research Study. The results of this landmark study will guide us along the path to bring our school libraries into the 21st century.

And, we thank those of you in the field – the practicing library media specialists – for your extraordinary dedication, your commitment, and your invaluable contributions through service to your schools, your DASites, and your State Projects.

And finally, thank you to all the people who pulled together to produce this event today. All the partners worked very hard toward one common goal – celebrating Ohio’s schools libraries.

See you next year!
